fast decisions

 

Elon Musk was asked by an interviewer what he does when he makes a wrong decision. He said he doesn't make decisions based on being right. He makes decisions based on expected value. Which means he expects to be wrong frequently. He said if you're not wrong at least 30% of the time you're not making enough decisions. He described SpaceX's approach to rocket design. Instead of spending years perfecting a design on paper and then building it, they build it fast, launch it, watch it explode, and use the explosion as data for the next version. The explosions aren't failures. They're the fastest way to generate the information needed for success. He said most companies fail not because they make bad decisions but because they make too few decisions. They spend so long trying to be right that the opportunity passes. A wrong decision made quickly generates data. A delayed decision generates nothing. Then he said the part that made the interviewer go quiet. He said the biggest mistakes of his career weren't the times he was wrong. They were the times he was right but too slow. The times he knew the answer and waited for more confirmation before acting. The delay cost more than any wrong answer ever did. The world sees Elon as a risk taker. He sees himself as someone who moves fast enough that the cost of being wrong is always lower than the cost of being slow. That's not the same thing as courage. It's math.

Leaders who know

 


A SpaceX intern once described eating lunch next to Elon Musk in the company cafeteria. The intern said Elon sat down at a regular table with a regular tray of food. No entourage. No reserved section. He sat next to two junior engineers who were clearly terrified. One of them was explaining a problem with a valve component to the other. Elon listened without introducing himself or interrupting. After about three minutes he turned to the engineer and said "have you tried running it at a lower pressure gradient first." The engineer stared at him. Then realized the CEO of the company had just casually solved a problem his team had been stuck on for a week. The intern said what happened next was the part that surprised him. Elon didn't leave. Didn't check his phone. He spent the next twenty minutes asking the engineers questions about their work. Not CEO questions about timelines and budgets. Engineering questions about fluid dynamics and material stress tolerances. He was genuinely curious. The cafeteria conversation was indistinguishable from a technical review. The intern said he understood in that moment why people work 80-hour weeks for this man. Not because he's inspiring. Not because he pays well. Because he's the only CEO in the world who sits in the cafeteria and solves your engineering problem between bites of a burrito. People follow leaders who are above them. People worship leaders who sit next to them and prove they understand the work better than the people doing it.

Directly from orbit to the phone in your pocket.

 

Elon Musk just spent seventeen billion dollars to make every cell tower on Earth a relic. Musk: “It will allow SpaceX to deliver high bandwidth connectivity directly from the satellites to the phones.” Not through towers. Not through cables. Not through any infrastructure on the ground. Directly from orbit to the phone in your pocket. For over a century, connectivity followed the same blueprint. Build a tower. Run a cable. Expand the network one piece of ground at a time. Coverage went where the money was. Where the population density justified the investment. Everywhere else got silence. Four billion people still don’t have reliable internet. Not because the technology doesn’t exist. Because no one could justify building a tower where they live. Connectivity was never a technology problem. It was a geography problem disguised as one. Musk: “The phones that are able to use the spectrum that was acquired probably start shipping in around two years.” Two years. Then the phone in your hand connects straight to space. No tower required. No carrier infrastructure between you and the signal. The entire telecom industry was built on one assumption. That connectivity requires ground infrastructure. Every carrier. Every contract. Every coverage map. All products of that assumption. Starlink just bypassed it from orbit. From orbit, every point on Earth is equidistant. The word “remote” only exists because connectivity was built from the ground up. From space, there is no remote. There is no coverage gap. There is no place on Earth harder to reach than any other. The ground decides who gets connected based on where they are. The sky doesn’t know the difference. Human potential was always distributed evenly across the planet. Access to information never was. The gap between those two facts is the greatest waste in human history. We spent a century deciding who deserved access to information based on where they happened to be born. Musk just made that question obsolete from 550 kilometers above the answer.

fixing sight




Elon Musk just proved every sighted person on Earth is blind. Your eye captures 0.0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum. You are not seeing the universe. You are seeing the sliver your biology decided was enough to keep you alive. That was never vision. That was a survival filter bolted onto your perception four hundred million years ago. No one has ever removed it. Musk: “Blindsight will enable those who have total loss of vision to be able to see again. Including if they have lost their eyes, or the optic nerve.” No eyes. No nerve. The entire optical system physically absent from the skull. Neuralink does not rebuild what broke. It routes around biology entirely. It streams synthetic signal straight into the visual cortex. Your eye never saw anything. Your brain did. Your brain sits in total darkness inside a vault of bone. It has never seen the sun. It has never seen anything. It builds reality out of whatever electrical signal the eye allows through. The eye is the bottleneck between your mind and the universe. Neuralink removes the bottleneck. Musk: “Maybe have never seen, were even blind from birth.” A human who has never perceived a single photon of light. Given sight for the first time. Not through medicine. Through engineering. Musk: “You can see in radar, you can see in infrared, ultraviolet.” Infrared is pouring off every surface in the room around you. Radio waves are passing through your body right now. Ultraviolet is painting patterns across everything you have ever looked at. You cannot see any of it. Your biology locked you out before you were born. Musk: “Superhuman capabilities.” The person born blind would not be restored to human sight. They would see more of the universe than any sighted person who has ever lived. The blind would out-see the sighted. You will not pity them. You will envy them. Musk: “Cybernetic enhancement.” Every human sense is a sensor converting the world into electrical signal. Replace the sensor and the brain does not care where the signal came from. It just processes. Your senses were never built to show you reality. They were built to show you just enough of it to survive. Evolution built a keyhole. We called it sight. Elon Musk is not fixing blindness. He is fixing sight.
